How to

The process starts with a drawing of your part(s) in a file format that the router can understand. Usable formats include .3DM, .dxf, .cdr, .ai, and many other vector file formats. If in doubt most drawing programs allow you to save as / export .dxf format files. If you do not have a computer drawing of your part you can mail or email a drawing or sketch along with the required sizes and we can draw it for you.

2D, 2.5D and V-carve processing is done from simple line drawings which specify the inside, outside, limit or pockets to be cut in the material. The angle of the V-carving and the depth of the pockets must also be specified. 3D carving requires a 3D model, which we prefer in Rhinoceros (.3DM) format but we have also used .STL and .IGES file formats for this purpose. Once you have a design you can email it to us and we will send you an estimate of the costs. Upon receiving your approval and payment in full we will cut and ship your part to you.

Tips for Preparing Files for CNC routing.

If you create your design using a program such as Rhinoceros, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, AutoCad, or TurboCAD, here are some tips for designing your parts;
  • Draw all parts to be processed on the Default layer
  • Draw all parts full size in black using solid lines
  • DO NOT USE BLOCK DEFINITIONS!!!
  • Details such as part numbers, material, depth of detail, or comments that are pertinent to the processing but not part of the detail can be put on a second layer (Details layer).
  • Remove / delete all other layers
  • Remove all fills and duplicated lines
  • Join all lines to form closed paths
  • Leave enough space around each part so that we can easily select them to create a cutting pattern.
Preferred file formats are:

  • .3DM - Rhinoceros Version 5.0 or earlier
  • .CDR - CorelDraw X6 or earlier
  • .AI - Adobe Illustrator (for PC) CS4 or earlier - Uncompressed
  • .DXF or .DWG - AutoCad R2000 or earlier - Uncompressed
  • .STL Stereolithography model

The largest part we can cut is 48" X 96" X 3". If the part doesn't fit in a 48" X 96" box in your drawing program, it will not fit on the Router either.
Note: Larger and thicker parts can be built up by cutting the parts in layers/pieces and building the final part from the layers/pieces.
